In a Nutshell: Religion in Taiwan

Original native Taiwanese tribes traditionally practice(d) nature worship. In 1624, European missionaries introduced Taiwan to Christianity (today, 4.5% of the population identify themselves as Christians). The Chinese brought Buddhism and Daoism to Taiwan. About 93% of the Taiwanese identify themselves with Buddhism, Daoism, or Chinese folk religion; however, identification with these faiths does not necessarily mean affiliation. It is very common for people to practice a blend of the three religions. Some practice Buddhism exclusively, but most blend Daoism (a polytheistic religion that emphasizes ancestor worship) with elements of Buddhism and folk traditions. Religious diversity has never been a significant source of conflict in Taiwan.
