As you may know, both of my brothers are currently in Chile, serving missions. Brian is in southern Chile, where the earthquake wasn't felt as strongly (it was about a 5 there). But where Scott is (close to Santiago), it was an 8.8. He told us, "I woke up with my bed rocking back and forth. I woke up my companion and all four of us missionaries ran downstairs and out of the house and went to a safe open area. The whole time the ground kept shaking more and more violently. There was an immense noise coming from all the shaking going on. It lasted for about 3-4 minutes. I grabbed onto our fence and it literally felt like I was surfing or something like that. We are way lucky in this part of Santiago because all of the houses are built really well and none of the ones around here fell. I guess in the poorer parts where the houses are weaker the houses collapsed and they are still without water and electricity."
My mom just sent me a link to this article, written by Scott's mission president's wife, about her experiences before and after the earthquake. You have to read it. It is very touching and eye-opening. It's one of the coolest things I have read in a long time.
